Lionshare : From The Ground (Palmipsest)
The debut full length album from a staple of the Cambridge underground scene, Lionshare have produced a fully realised album making the wait for their debut certainly worth it. Recorded in the ‘live in a room’ tradition (with some overdubs in this case) through vintage recording gear straight to 8 track analogue tape, the recording is reminiscent of the classic Joe Boyd productions of the 60s. More song based than previous material and live performances, there’s a distinct pastoral Cambridge sound. Songs are developed around finger picked acoustic guitar with flourishes of cello, organ and electric guitar together with a mixture of instruments such as the terang, singing bowl and board zither. While at times the album sounds steeped in the British Isles, on occasion the songs open amidst drones and improvisations for excursions far beyond our shores.
