Shelby Lynne : Just A Little Lovin’ (Lost Highway)
Eight years after « I Am Shelby Lynne » was hailed as a country-pop-soul classic to rival « Dusty In Memphis », we are treated to an album of classics originally made famous by the timeless Ms Springfield. Stripping all the 60s bombast away from the originals, most of these versions start with rim-shot drums, muted slide guitar and Fender Rhodes. To hear the likes of « You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me » or « I Don’t Want To Hear It Anymore » delivered in a Southern whisper as vulnerable as it is seductive is a real revelation. As with Cat Powers’ « Jukebox » album, there is one self-penned track, « Pretend », written in homage to its inspiration.
