Gary Higgins : Red Hash (Drag City)
Recent followers of all things psyche/prog/folk/? may be forgiven for sighing at the discovery of yet another ‘lost’ classic. Chasnys’ cover of « Thicker than a Smokey » on ’05s « School Of the Flower » attests to the authenticity of « Red Hash ». In gestation for years, the sessions took place over a couple of days in 1973 before Higgins was imprisoned over a minor pot bust. Ignore the myth-making back story, though, and revel in the results; drifters’ laments and sinuous nursery rhymes set to fine-spun acoustic guitars, bolstered by an array of woodwind, percussion and strings. An enchanting period piece finally getting due recognition.
